Vasiliy Lomachenko, left, will have a tough test on Oct. 17 against Teofimo Lopez in Las Vegas.
Vasiliy Lomachenko , who is considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters, praised the skills of his rival, the Honduran-American Teófimo López, who seeks on October 17 in Las Vegas to unify all the 135-pound straps and sell himself as the new young boxing star.
“Hit, he has speed and intelligence. He's young and he's hungry, “Lomachenko, 32, described the 23-year-old fighter in a teleconference on Tuesday organized by Top Rank, the company in charge of putting together the card.
“But we will see on October 17,” added Lomachenko. “The way for boxers to compare our skills is only by facing the big fighters.”
Lopez enters the fight as champion of the International Boxing Federation and undefeated in 15 fights, of which he has won 12 by knockout.
The last seven fighters he has faced had a record of 182-9 at the time of facing them. Among those seven rivals is a world champion in Richard Commey and a former titleholder in Diego Magdaleno , remembered in Puerto Rico because he fell to Román “Rocky” Martínez . In fact, Martinez later fell to Lomachenko.
For his part, Lomachenko comes to the fight with the belts of the World Boxing Organization, the World Boxing Council and the World Boxing Association.
The two-time Olympic champion has dispatched an Olympic champion and multiple professional champions in his short 15-fight professional career, including Puerto Ricans Martínez and José Pedraza, Venezuelan José Linares and Cuban Roberto Rigondeaux.
On top of his experience against champion opponents, Lomachenko said he does not consider his age a disadvantage, as he is 9 years older than his opponent.
“Who sets the criteria on who is of legal age? I am 32 years old and I feel very good, ”he said.
In fact, López participated in a similar conference on Monday and the subject of the experience came up. The historic battle between Puerto Rican Felix 'Tito' Trinidad and Mexican Fernando Vargas was mentioned, which favored the oldest fighter. When they fought in 2000, Trinidad was 5 years older than Vargas, whom the Puerto Rican knocked out after knocking him down four more times during the fight.
Lomachenko did not specify what he will do after facing López. He mentioned that he could stay at 135 pounds or move up to 140. If he stays at 135 pounds, one of his potential rivals is Puerto Rican Felix Verdejo.
“It depends on what happens after this fight, I will make what is the best decision for me,” said the Ukrainian.
