Caracas – The official campaign command announced this Saturday that it will hold a popular consultation throughout Venezuela , with which it hopes to collect proposals for a possible legislative plan that it would launch after the December parliamentary elections, in which the bulk of the opposition.
“We started a consultation throughout the national territory to talk with ordinary people,” the head of the command, Jorge Rodríguez , said at a press conference, who indicated that this process will begin on Monday 5 and will last until the 20th of this month.
Although he did not explain if the consultation will be done in person, despite the quarantine that has been in force in the country since March to prevent the spread of COVID-19 , he insisted that the government candidates seek to know the expectations and “dreams” of citizens , ahead of the elections.
In this process, Rodríguez continued, they hope to talk with representatives of non-governmental organizations, businessmen, and indigenous peoples, among others, to build “a program of changes that seeks to look to the future.”
“We build the program for the next legislative period with the people (…) we are going to a larger consultation, because we are going to speak with all sectors,” he said.
Among the issues they hope to address, he mentioned the defense of territory and sovereignty, how to develop a self-sustaining economy, topics related to marriages and families, possible reforms to the penal and commercial codes, or to increase procedural speed.
Invitation to the EU
Asked about the conditions made by the European Union (EU) to delay the elections for six months in order to accept participation as electoral observers, Rodríguez only insisted that the invitation is open, although the Government has made it clear that the call to the polls to December.
“Our only opinion is that they come. Of course they can come, of course they can come (…) if they want to come see the Venezuelan electoral system they can come see. We ratify our invitation to all ”, he said.
The former minister announced that in the next few days the National Electoral Council (CNE) will publish the list of international observers who will participate in the legislative elections, since, he assured, invitations were sent to missions and experts “from the five continents” and they have been responding.
The official announcement comes two days after the Parliament, with an opposition majority, approved another consultation promoted by Juan Guaidó , recognized as interim president of Venezuela, which seeks to measure the rejection of the legislatures and the support for the possibility of exercising “all international pressure ”against the Government.
Rodríguez insisted this Saturday that delegates from the government of Nicolás Maduro have held dialogues and agreements with “the entire spectrum” of the opposition except with the “radical extreme right”, alluding to the legislative majority that supports Guaidó.
That part of the anti-Chavismo gathered around Guaidó, also the head of Parliament, considers the votes called for December “fraudulent” and promotes the opposition consultation that continues without a fixed date and will not be binding.
