The celebration of a winter tournament of the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (Lbprc) with fans in the stands he received the green light today to be carried out by the government of Puerto Rico.
The president of the Lbprc, Juan Flores Galarza, said that this emerged during a meeting with the Secretary of the Interior, Antonio Pabón, held in La Fortaleza, which was “very productive.”
“The secretary said he agreed but (the permit) is subject to the behavior of Puerto Ricans,” Flores Galarza said after leaving the meeting. “That is not bad. It would have been bad for him to say no, but he expressed interest in having a tournament but subject to what may happen from here to there with the infection figures according to the behavior of citizens.
The president of the league recalled that before the start of the tournament in December there will be important events on the island such as the general elections and Thanksgiving Day, which as happened on other dates when the public came out en masse and gathered , could raise the levels of infections in the country.
According to the levels of contagion at the time of starting the special season of the Lbprc, which would start in December, the recommendation could change to play but behind closed doors.
Flores Galarza explained that the approval for the celebration of the tournament had to come from the Secretary of the Interior because the current prohibition of sporting events arises from the Executive Order in effect signed by the governor, Wanda Vázquez Garced.
In this case, the Sports and Recreation Department (DRD) and its secretary, Adriana Sánchez Parés, gave a positive recommendation to the health protocol plan that the Lbprc presented to manage the presence of players, fans and employees in the stadiums.
Present at the meeting were Flores Galarza, Pabón and the owner of the Atenienses de Manatí, Javier Hernández, a microbiologist who helped develop the health protocols for the stadiums.
The next season would be celebrated with six teams: Aguadilla, Carolina, Caguas, Santurce, Mayaguez, and the RA12 team.
