The grand jury of Tyler, a small county in East Texas, in the United States , filed charges against Netflix for promoting obscene child material for the French film “Cuties,” according to The Texas Tribune.
The film has been criticized by members of the Republican Party such as Ted Cruz and Brian Babin and some thirty legislators who presented a letter to the Attorney General of the United States, William Barr, to act against the film , which they call “child pornography”.
Brian Babin is the father of the prosecutor who has filed the charges, Lucas Babin, according to the same media. “Cuties” (“Mignonnes” in its original French title, translated as “Guapis” in Spain) is a French film directed by the director Maïmouna Doucouré that portrays the experiences of an eleven-year-old girl of Senegalese origin (the same ancestry as Doucouré ) who challenges her family's conservative values when she joins a dance group.
The film participated in the Berlinale and Sundance, where it won the award for the best direction of an international dramatic film. Its premiere has been surrounded by a notable controversy in the networks for its promotional poster in which the girls, with a clearly sexualized image, appear in a choreography . Netflix apologized for this artwork and changed it.
The poster used in the United States contrasts with the one in France, where the girls appear smiling walking down the street with shopping bags. In a press release, the prosecutor in Tyler, a county of just over 20,000 people, assures that after hearing criticism of the film and seeing it, he is aware that there is “probable criminal cause” against the film .
Netflix has been notified of the charges. Before its premiere on Netflix, the film had good reviews, and in the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator it accumulates 86% positive reviews. The Brazilian government, led by the extremist Jair Bolsonaro, recently asked to suspend the transmission of the film and investigate Netflix because the film features “child pornography” and has scenes that simulate “sexual practices.”
