Ultimately, it is also the task of a school to ensure a reasonable workload, continuity and health of all parties involved despite the pandemic. In addition, the aim was to create uniform conditions for all students, says Krummenacher.

That's what it's all about

  • Starting this Thursday, the elementary school in Sachseln OW is sending all classes to distance learning. 530 students are affected.

  • According to Rector Remo Krummenacher, the corona cases at the school are steadily increasing. With this measure, one would now like to reduce the number of cases.

  • A majority of the teachers as well as the parents welcome the decision of the school council. According to Krummenacher, only the students are disappointed that they have to go to distance learning again.

Only recently, the canton of Bern got serious and decided to send its students early for the Christmas holidays. The reasons are the sharp rise in corona cases among 10 to 19 year olds and the increasing number of teachers absent due to illness. Other cantons are considering similar steps. In Obwalden in particular, the situation threatens to escalate: With a 7-day incidence of 1299, the Central Swiss canton, followed by Appenzell I. Rh. (1227), is at the top of this tragic statistic across Switzerland. The elementary school in Sachseln in Obwalden is now pulling the emergency brake and sending all classes to distance learning from Thursday.

Infection events no longer under control

“In view of the situation at our school, the school board unanimously decided to send all primary and secondary classes to distance learning until the Christmas holidays,” says Remo Krummenacher, Rector of the elementary school in Sachseln. The school has around 530 children and young people who are taught in a total of 70 classes. How many positive cases there have been at the school so far, Krummenacher cannot name for reasons of confidentiality between the elementary school and the canton of Obwalden. Nevertheless, the rector adds: “The numbers are rising steadily and we no longer have the chains of infection under control. That's why we decided to take this regrettable step. ”

The reasons for the decision, however, are varied. Not only did more and more students have to go to distance learning, but more and more teachers were also absent. “With this measure, we simply want to prevent further teaching staff from being absent. The primary goal is to break the chain of infection and minimize the number of cases, ”says Krummenacher. Ultimately, it is also the task of a school to ensure a reasonable workload, continuity and health of all parties involved despite the pandemic. In addition, the aim was to create uniform conditions for all students.

Decision based on consensus

The decision was not made suddenly. Various options were sent to the teachers for consultation in advance. «The teachers were presented with various options. Ultimately, based on the feedback from the teaching staff, the school council and the rectorate decided in favor of a uniform, cross-level solution, ”said the rector. According to Krummenacher, if the face-to-face lessons had been continued, the cantonal requirements regarding the mask requirement and the tests ordered would have to be expanded and intensified.

However, all teachers agreed that something had to be done in view of the precarious situation, said Krummenacher. Before the decision was made, the school principal was contacted by concerned parents who also requested distance learning. “Accordingly, the feedback for our decision from the parents was overwhelmingly positive.” According to Krummenacher, only the students are not happy about the measure because they will be separated from their friends again.

Procedure after Christmas holidays open

Krummenacher knows from other schools that they are also thinking about tightening the measures or even distance learning. But the rector cannot yet say how things will continue for the elementary school in Sachseln after the Christmas break. «We will assess the situation during the holidays and then make an appropriate decision. However, we are confident that we will be able to return to face-to-face classes after the holidays, ”says Krummenacher.
