Three years after Hurricane María, the Hispanic Federation began the second phase of the Revive el Cafetal Puertorriqueño program , which consists of subsidizing the cost of 2.25 million high-quality coffee trees for native coffee growers.
In this second phase, all producers who have not yet applied to take advantage of this incentive are invited and exhorted, emphasizing those who lost their crops due to the most recent storms Isaías and Laura.
During the first phase of the project, it was possible to impact more than 400 coffee growers in 30 towns, surpassing the half million coffee trees distributed to date.
As part of the program, coffee producers only invest 25 ¢ per tree, the remaining part of the cost is subsidized by the program. On the other hand, those who have already received this incentive can call to request a second round, depending on availability.
Hispanic Federation indicated in a press release that the entity is active responding to requests and distributing coffee trees to coffee growers. The trees are of superior quality, produced by Puerto Rico Coffee Roasters, LLC. in trays and using biodegradable bags.
This tree program is part of a broader initiative to revitalize Puerto Rico's coffee sector. This initiative, led by the Hispanic Federation, is a multisectoral effort between various non-profit and philanthropic organizations, the private sector, and the artist with Puerto Rican roots and philanthropist Lin-Manuel Miranda and the Miranda family.
As part of this initiative, TechnoServe has been supporting interested recipients of the trees with technical support in the field. TechnoServe is a non-profit organization that has more than 50 years of international experience helping small-scale farmers, and they have become a key part of our coffee growers in offering training and individualized technical support to improve the performance of their farms.
