Samih Sawiris is pursuing a new project in Uri: two marinas including hotels and restaurants are to be built. With a possible land purchase in Seedorf UR, the project is now gaining momentum.
Samih Sawiris has had a new goal this spring: to build two marinas with shops and hotels on Lake Uri. With a possible land purchase in the community of Seedorf UR, the project is now gaining momentum.
Although the project is primarily a sketch of ideas, the Swiss Landscape Protection Foundation has already expressed harsh criticism of the project.
“Marinas have as much to do with Lake Uri as glaciers have to do with the desert. The Isleten Delta is extremely scenic and deserves careful planning. A Disneyland in the form of a boat harbor moved into the delta must not be built there, ”says Raimund Rodewald, Director of Landscape Protection Switzerland.
Since spring 2021, Samih Sawiris has been planning two on Lake Uri Build marinas with shops and hotels.
With a possible land purchase in the community of Seedorf UR, the project now seems to be more concrete.
The Swiss Landscape Protection Foundation, however, is extremely critical of the project. But Eveline Lüönd from the Greens also wants to prevent a “second Andermatt”.
Isidor Baumann, who heads the project for Sawiris, puts it into perspective. They are still working on the idea and want to involve the general public in the project.
After the major project in Andermatt, the Egyptian investor Samih Sawiris is now turning his attention to the shores of Lake Uri. He has been planning to build two marinas there since spring 2021. So two artificially created boat bays are to be created. In addition to the ports, the investor also wants to build three-star hotels, apartments, shops and restaurants. The plans now seem to be taking on more concrete forms. As the “Luzerner Zeitung” reports, Sawiris can buy the land from the former Cheddite explosives facility near Isleten. The Flüeler Allmend, right next to the Reuss delta, could be another possible location for the second port.
Landscape protection Switzerland expresses concern
The Swiss Landscape Protection Foundation is extremely critical of the project: “Marinas have as much to do with Lake Uri as glaciers have to do with the desert. The Isleten Delta is very scenic and deserves careful planning. A Disneyland in the form of a boat harbor moved into the delta must not be created there, ”says Raimund Rodewald, Director of Landscape Protection Switzerland. Rodewald also says: «Mr Sawiris and I had a debate after we had publicly criticized his project. I now hope that he will drop his original plans. ” That is why one waits for the concrete plans and then decides on possible objections. According to Rodewald, a lot of people from Uri have complained to his foundation about the planned Sawiris project.
Investors' daring plans are met with concerns
District Administrator Eveline Lüönd (Greens) is also critical of the project. She has also written a request to the Uri government about this. In it, she wants to know, for example, how the government feels about the project. “The planned marinas increase the canton's dependence on a single investor and on tourism,” she writes. In addition to environmental issues, the canton must therefore also clarify which interests are weighted and how. “We don't want a second Andermatt,” Lüönd told the “NZZ”.
The politician is not alone with her concerns. Because only ten years ago the people of Flüelen refused a planning loan for Flüelen-West, where one of the two marinas is planned, thus preventing the area from being rededicated for the time being.
“The project is still in its infancy and therefore nothing has been definitely decided yet,” says Isidor Baumann, who is heading the planned project for investor Sawiris. Under no circumstances do you want to create exclusivity on Lake Uri, but in principle create a place of entertainment and lingering for everyone. “The goal is not necessarily to build two marinas, but to expand the social offer in the region.” Therefore, among other things, shops and restaurants are planned as meeting places. According to Baumann, the example of Andermatt also showed something important: “Projects are only as good as they are accepted. We were already able to observe this with the project in Andermatt. That is why it is very important for us to take the interests and needs of the population or environmental organizations into account when planning. ”
