Ottawa to donate $ 1.5 million to fight sexual violence on campus
The Liberal government has committed up to $ 1.5 million to help colleges and universities better address sexual violence on campus.
M aryam Monsef, Minister of Women and Gender Equality, said the money should be spent over two years to fill the gaps in the resources that post-secondary institutions need to tackle the problem.
Earlier this year, Ms. Monsef asked an advisory committee to develop national standards to hold universities and colleges accountable for combating gender-based violence.
Student groups praised the efforts but said these promises should be accompanied by the necessary resources and supervision to carry them out.
The Liberal government spent $ 5.5 million over five years on this initiative in the 2018 federal budget.
The budget also indicated that beginning this year, the federal government will consider funding for institutions that do not implement “best practices for dealing with sexual assault on campus”.
