The Puerto Rican tennis player Mónica Puig fell 2-6 and 1-6 on Monday to the veteran Italian and well-known rival, Sara Errani , in the first round of the French Open.
Puig was 4-0 for life against Errani, including three victories on clay, which is the surface of the French Open.
It was the second consecutive Grand Slam tournament this year in which the Puerto Rican lost her first round. The first was the US Open in late August.
Puig gave the Italian 34 unforced errors in the match , including five double faults on a damp and cold morning. The Open is traditionally played in June. However, the coronavirus pandemic forced the delay of its calendar this year.
The match started down for the Puerto Rican, who gave up her first serve to give Errani a quick advantage, who, for her part, held her serve to take the lead 2-0. In the fifth game , Errani again broke Puig's serve to take off 4-1.
In the second set, Puig lost service in the third, fifth and last games .
The Italian entered the main bracket of the event through the qualifying rounds. 34 years old and with over $ 13 million in prize money in her career, Errani did not enter Roland Garros directly because she is ranked 150th on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tour.
Puig, number 98 in the WTA and who just celebrated her 27th birthday on Sunday, has played only two official tournaments in 2020. She operated at the end of 2019 and her first official event this season was the US Open.
This Monday's defeat in the first round could cost Puig points for the WTA ranks , due to the poor performance he had today compared to the third round he reached in the last edition of the event, held in June 2019.
The WTA tour continues in October with events in Europe and Asia, mostly on the latter continent.
