On Monday, a fatal mountain accident occurred in the municipality of Urnäsch AR. A 71-year-old man went on a hiking tour from Kronberg towards Urnäsch unaccompanied. When he could no longer be reached by the relatives, the police were informed of the missing person shortly before 7 p.m.

Thereupon the rescue workers initiated a comprehensive search operation. Shortly after 3 a.m. the hiker was found lifeless by a dog handler from Alpine Rescue Eastern Switzerland (ARO). According to current knowledge, the man slipped while hiking and then fell about 80 meters down a steep slope. In addition to the Alpine Rescue in Eastern Switzerland, specialist services from the Appenzell Ausserrhoden canton police and two Rega helicopters were also in action.
