That's what it's about

  • The Austrian ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz switches to the private sector and takes on a managerial position at a company owned by tech entrepreneur Peter Thiel.

  • The 54-year-old Thiel founded PayPal in 1998 and was the first Facebook investor.

  • The billionaire was also an advisor to Donald Trump and has been married to financial expert Matt Danzeisen since 2017.

Austria's ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz resigned from all political offices in December. Proceedings are pending against him on suspicion of corruption. As it became known on Thursday, the 35-year-old is now switching to the private sector.

He takes up a managerial position in the USA. There he will start as a global strategist at the investment company Thiel Capital in the first quarter of 2022. Kurz's annual salary is said to be well above the EUR 312,000 gross he earned as Chancellor.

Thiel Capital is owned by tech entrepreneur Peter Thiel. The 54-year-old was born in Frankfurt am Main and has both German, New Zealand and US citizenship. In 1998, Thiel founded the payment service Paypal together with the current Tesla CEO Elon Musk and was the first investor in Facebook and CEO of Palantir, a US provider of software and services that specializes in the analysis of large amounts of data, and that time and again causes controversy. In the past few days it had been speculated that Kurz would take up a position at Palantir.

Kurz and Thiel have known each other for many years

Kurz has known the billionaire Thiel for many years. There is even a joint photo from the Munich Security Conference 2017 – Kurz was Foreign Minister at the time. Kurz wrote on Twitter: «It's great to have met you. Thanks for the opportunity.” Kurz and Thiel are said to have already talked about digitization back then and never lost sight of each other afterwards. This basis of trust is likely to have helped Austria's ex-Chancellor to quickly get hold of the top-paid managerial position on the US west coast after the political breakdown.

Kurz has a soft spot for California and its tech giants. He traveled repeatedly to the west coast of the USA as Secretary of State and Chancellor. Another trip would have been due in October – due to the political affair, it didn't happen again. It fell as well as a laudation that Kurz should have given Peter Thiel in Berlin. The investor and multi-billionaire was awarded the Frank Schirrmacher Prize there.

Thiel was an advisor to Donald Trump

Thiel has been married to financial expert Matt Danzeisen since 2017. In 2007 he was outed as homosexual by the US gossip blog “Gawker”. In the process of the former wrestler Hulk Hogan against the online portal, he took over Hogan's legal fees of ten million dollars. Gawker had posted a sex tape of Hogan and was sentenced to $ 115 million in damages. As a result, «Gawker» went bankrupt.

In the 2016 election campaign, the multibillionaire Thiel donated $ 1.25 million to Donald Trump, and was later even an advisor to the then US President. On July 22nd, 2016, the tech entrepreneur gave a speech at the Republican Convention in Cleveland, to the applause of the attendees, in which he presented Trump as the savior of the nation and said: “I am proud to be gay. I am proud to be a Republican. Above all, I'm proud to be an American! »
