Puerto Rican forward Karina Socarrás is ready to wear the # 8 jersey and make history this Sunday, September 27, 2020, when the season of the Portuguese Professional Football League begins with Club Sport Marítimo de Madeira.
The 26-year-old and 5'6 ″ tall member of the National Women's Soccer Team will make her debut in the Portuguese first division against Grupo Desportivo Estoril de Praia at 3:00 pm (10:00 am Puerto Rico).
“I feel very comfortable with this Madeira team on the field. I feel like myself in all my facets and I know that I can contribute to the team with all this energy that I have. I'm going to work hard and contribute everything I need, ”Socarrás said in a telephone interview from Portugal.
“Maybe some will be surprised because they can put me in one or another position, but for me it is a pleasure to be able to help the team in everything they need since that is how my great Ricardo“ Richie ”Romano has taught me all my life, being able to be a versatile person on the field of play, “said the soccer player gratefully about the veteran Argentine coach.
“I am happy and wanting to give more every day. After Sunday, a path towards our great goal begins, to go through those first places by working hard ”, he pointed out.

Socarrás arrived in Portugal on August 30 to undergo a battery of medical and physical tests, and to start training with the club. A day before, the athlete said goodbye to Bayamón FC on her social networks, the team with which she played the start of the 2019-2020 season of the Puerto Rico League (LPR), which was canceled due to the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID- 19).
“When I put that post I am landing in Newark on the way to Portugal. I felt like doing it at that time because I felt it was the way to close that chapter in my life, ”Socarrás revealed. “Many people thought I was retiring because I was a ghost for weeks. No one knew where he was, but he was already doing all the paperwork and testing in Portugal. Those who really know me know that I was not retiring because I love football ”, said the player, who thanked her friend Diego Benvenuti for the help in the process to achieve the signing with Madeira.
Now, Socarrás is ready to undertake this new chapter in her life in Portugal and in her sports history as a professional after playing for Club Cúcuta Deportivo de Colombia (2017) and with Málaga CF, in the second division of Spain (2017-2018 ), eleventh who managed to ascend to the first division that season.
“I was reviewing the history of the Madeira team, I watched the games, I saw the numbers, and it's a very good team. It is a team that rose to the first division two years ago; now he will play the second season in that division. To be in that division, a lot of work is needed to stay among the teams to win ”, he indicated about his new sports family. “They were in sixth place out of 11 teams and the games I saw, it's a well-formed team, the union they have is very important and when they lost, they were quite close games and that speaks a lot about the team,” he said.
“Now, this season, I have a good feeling because the team looks great. Since I arrived I have appreciated a change with more seriousness, more hard work, intensity. We are in a team that could surprise this season, “said the member with more than a decade wearing the national colors with the National Team.
Karina Socarrás signed her contract as soon as she arrived in Portugal and passed the COVID-19 detection tests.
Socarrás highlighted and thanked the hospitality and attention that all the administration and her teammates have given her to make her feel at ease since her arrival in this country.
“Upon arriving here (in Portugal) I felt like they integrated me immediately. They are an impressive team, and I continue to know them. They have great dynamics and very good energy, and that gave me the way to mentalize what this new season is, “said the forward. “When I saw the team for the first time, I could see a lot of young women, but I could also distinguish who were the veterans, the leaders, the most experienced in the team. I really liked the unit ”, he highlighted.
Regarding the Madeira region, he indicated that “it is a beautiful island. I can see the sea, the wind that blows here is wonderful, the climate, the people and the culture. As soon as I got here I felt that atmosphere, those football airs, that I love so much. That football culture in which everyone talks about the game and when the club plays, is what we live here ”.
“I have not had the opportunity to know every corner of this island because I have been working hard and studying, but I will have the opportunity to visit it,” concluded Socarrás, who is studying his Master's Degree in Psychological Counseling at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico. .
