Accidents can happen quickly when a driver is distracted. Therefore, in the future, you should no longer be able to play games while driving in Teslas.

In a Tesla, all functions are controlled via the central, large screen.

You can also play games on this.

The driver has also been able to do this since last year – even while driving.

That's what

  • In Teslas you can play games on the large front screen while driving.

  • Actually, this function is only intended for the front passenger.

  • Since last year it has also been possible for the driver to play the games.

  • An American authority finds this unsustainable.

Under pressure from the US traffic safety agency NHTSA, Tesla has agreed to turn off video games on the central display of its cars while driving. Corresponding software updates were made on Wednesday and were completed on Thursday, announced the NHTSA.

On Wednesday, the agency announced that it was opening a formal investigation into what Tesla called “Passenger Play” features of an infotainment offer. Since 2020, this has also made it possible for drivers to play games on the screen on the center console while driving. Before that, video games were only enabled in a stationary car. In the USA, 580,000 vehicles of the electric car manufacturer built between 2017 and 2022 are affected.

«Absolutely crazy»

The NHTSA said that “passenger play” could distract the driver and increase the risk of causing an accident. 59-year-old Tesla driver Vince Patton filed an official complaint in November after discovering the program in his car. He loves his car and has nothing against Tesla, but people who play computer games while driving can be dangerously distracted. “Someone will be killed,” he said. “It's absolutely crazy.”

This has not yet had any impact on the European market. As reported by, the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), for example, does not feel responsible and refers to the relevant authorities in the Netherlands. Tesla could not initially be reached for comment. The company's press office has been closed.
