The Ministry of Agriculture of Brazil reported this Tuesday that it has detected “fungi, mites and bacteria” in some mysterious seeds arrived by mail, apparently from Asia, and warned that they may be “dangerous”.
The authorities explained that they have already detected 258 packages of these seeds, which have reached 25 of the 27 states of the country in recent weeks and that in many of the cases analyzed so far they had not even been requested by those who received them. “It is a material without control,” he said.
“It is not known how it was originated or if it has been treated with any chemical product or if it is toxic, either for man or for animals, so it should not be handled and it is requested that it be immediately handed over to the authorities,” he said. the Secretary of Agricultural Defense, José Guilherme Leal.
At a press conference, the Ministry of Agriculture official said that “we must be rigorous now”, act “preventively” and ask the population to “collaborate with the investigation” on the origin of the seeds, which in their most come from China, Hong Kong and Malaysia and are of species not yet identified. The same phenomenon has been detected in the United States, Canada and other countries, where packages with seeds from Asia have also been received through the mail.
Leal said that, at the moment, there are no reasons for alarms, but there are reasons for “precautions”, and ruled out for now that these shipments could be related to any “attack” against agriculture in Brazil, one of the largest food producers in the world. world .
“There are no elements to affirm that it is an intentional action to introduce an organism or pathogen that is harmful to Brazilian agriculture, but the risks always exist,” he said.
The Ministry of Agriculture has stressed that the entry of seeds to Brazil is only allowed when they come from suppliers from countries with which there are already phytosanitary agreements, and which must also be certified by the authorities of origin.
